My Titanic Era Outfit

Woman selling Irish lace on the Titanic

April 15, 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.  We purchased the only accurate Titanic DVD, recommended by Vision Forum, which we watched last week.  The DVD, A Night to Remember, is was based on the novel by the same name and is put out by the Criterion Collection.

The other night the Patriarch & I watched the extras on disk two.  Very, very good!  I highly recommend this.  There were two different interviews of Titanic survivors, a behind the scenes of how it was made along with some background information and much more!  The only caution from disk two… the global warming junk-science & the 15,000 years ago mantra in the feature on icebergs.

Here is a link to some never before seen photos.

The Titanic’s musicians

In some of the early articles it said “Lead, Kindly Light” was one of the hymns played by the musicians while the ship sank.  This is not a hymn I was familiar with.  I love the words!  The tune can be found at the link through the hymn title.  I had heard that they played Nearer My God to Thee, and David Craig sang that hymn at the Titanic 100 event.

Lead, Kindly Light

Lead, kindly Light, amid th’ encircling gloom, lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still will lead me on.
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till the night is gone,
And with the morn those angel faces smile, which I
Have loved long since, and lost awhile!

Meantime, along the narrow rugged path, Thyself hast trod,
Lead, Savior, lead me home in childlike faith, home to my God.
To rest forever after earthly strife
In the calm light of everlasting life.

steward & stewardess, surviving crew of the Titanic

As I have looked at various Titanic pictures it struck me that I made a Titanic era outfit!  It is my “Aunt Mae” persona clothing and I thought you might enjoy seeing what I made.  I used mostly what was already in my closet, making a few changes by adding  period-looking embellishments.

Here is my jacket with photos of the decorative details.  The jacket was purchased about 7 years ago and only worn a few times.  The decorative trim was originally along only one edge of the lapel and center front, has three-quarter sleeves and four buttons and button holes.  The original design was to wear this jacket buttoned up.  If you look at the surviving stewardess in the photo above, you will see her jacket collar is very similar to my jacket’s stand-up collar!

I searched for matching trim to add to the other lapel and bottom edges and attached it with my sewing machine.  The frog closure was sewn on by hand,  buttons removed and the button holes hand-sewn closed.  Black velvet ribbon was attached on top of the existing belt and a decorative button added.  The only thing left to do is to add black velvet cuffs for a bit more authentic look.

My shirt is one I have had in my closet for many years.  It is a light cream with a covered-button placket, embroidered with tiny purple violets and green leaves.

shirt front and lace cuff

Lace was attached to the cuffs so that is hangs below the jacket sleeves.  This is actually lace with a second decorative trim sewn on top of where the lace attached.  All sewn on by hand.

IN “those” days, a woman past childbearing age would wear black as a symbol of her infertility or when she was in mourning.  I used what was already in my closet, and didn’t intend to make a mourning outfit and my whole outfit cannot be considered mourning as my hat is NOT black!  This was a hat I also had in my closet for a several years.   A few alterations later and an embellishment or two added… well maybe more than two things!  😀

partial top view

The brim trim is a lace scarf out of my closet.  I cannot even remember when I acquired it and I never wore it.  I love scarves, but hadn’t worn this one.  All the flowers and feathers I purchased from the fabric store and were wired on and some are hot glued in place.

I could not find a hat pin that was A) long enough or B) in my price range.  Mostly the former.  My favorite hardware store, McLendon’s, to the rescue!  I bought a small package of piano wire and Arrow filed one end to a point… of sorts anyway!  I then bent one end of the wire to hold a decorative button to match the jacket-belt button.  It was too thin and not secure enough but worked until I could find the “hat pin of my dreams”!  🙂  The “hat pin of my dreams” I purchased through Ebay.  These things could also be used as a weapon in an extreme emergency… it is 14 inches long, has a thick, sturdy shaft and is VERY pointy.

Aunt Mae & her soaps!

The Titanic’s soap label

Over at Jennie Chancey’s blog (http://sensibility.com/blog/reproducing-1912-fashions-remember-titanic/) and at the end of the article you will find a link to download a free eBook containing all the images in this special feature, plus an array of extra goodies that will help you gain an excellent picture of the time period. You can print these for your own personal use, and feel free to pass the link around to others. The eBook is free until the end of April!

If you look at page 22 of the free e-book, you will see pictures of blouses.  My collar isn’t too far off!!  I didn’t have time for complete authenticity in my wardrobe, just a ‘sense of the times’.  In my portrait I wore a lace collar that I pinned the jabot to.  But the jabot wouldn’t be worn at home… so I am working on an apron.

Oh my skirt?  Um, … well… it isn’t even close to being right.  It only goes down to the mid calf.  I guess after the apron, a Beatrix Potter skirt is on my to-do list!

To tie the Titanic disaster to today…

Blessings, ~Aunt Mae (aka ~Mrs. R)

It is a beautiful spring Saturday here in the Pacific Northwest.  The birds are busy singing, the trees are blooming & budding and you know what that means?!?!

Well, yes, it does mean it is time to plant your garden, begin cutting the grass, fighting all those pesky weeds and the ever hated – – – tax time.

But spring heralds something more exciting than all that.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner!!

This year pamper your mom, daughter or close friend with my luxuriously moisturizing, handcrafted, natural soaps.  I have a wonderful array of soap scents any mother/daughter/woman would love!  The best part is my special gives you more bang for your buck by offering a free 2 ounce bar of soap for every two 4 ounce bars purchased.

See my Mae’s Soap page for details or use the flyer below.

All the new scents are made using my new soap formula with more lather and are indicated on the flyer with an asterisk or stated as the new formula on my soap page.  Feel free to pass this flyer along to anyone you think would love handcrafted natural soaps!   (Sale Flyer – Mother’s Day 2012)

There are two scents I would like to highlight.  The first is a Mae’s Soap exclusive scent you will find no where else.  It was wildly popular at Christmas.  I created this scent in honor of my mother-in-law as it is her favorite candy – Chocolate Covered Cherries.  This smells so good you might be tempted to take a bite!  But use it in the shower instead for a treat without the calories!!

The second scent is in honor of my grandmother.  This was her favorite flower – Sweet Pea.  I colored this a gentle yellow because yellow was also her favorite color!  It was when I went to my Daddy-J’s memorial that I found out about my grandmother’s favorite flower & color.  I never knew this as a child.  I guess I just never thought to ask.

If YOU are the mother/daughter/woman who would love to get some of these wonderful soaps for Mother’s Day, please share this post with your family!!  I would also appreciate your sharing this on any of your social media sites!

Blessings, ~Mrs. R (aka Aunt Mae)

Jan 2012 Photo A Day Challenge – Day 25 – Something You Made

Day 25 is “Something You Made”

CUSTOM RING BEARER PILLOWS

SET ONE

Set 1 - Ivory - Bride's Pillow

Set 1 - Ivory - Groom's Pillow

Set 1 Pillows were made from the same Duponi silk fabric in ivory as the bride’s custom-made dress.  The hand appliqued lace is also the same as the bride’s dress.  The lace was applied so the bride & groom pillow tops are mirrors of each other.  They each have a scroll-braid-trim snap ring holder.  The groom’s pillow edging is the same color as the bridesmaid’s dresses and the groomsmen’s vests.

SET TWO

Bride's, Groom's and Honeymoon Corsage set

Silk flowers

Hand Beading

"I'm The Bride!" Honeymoon Corsage

Set Two is made from  silk fabric in a color called ice similar to the bride’s dress.  These pillows were made to go with a stunning store bought dress with pearl and crystal beading at the bodice and hem.  Tons and tons of pearls and crystals!  On the edge of the bride’s pillow I used a repeating pattern of 3 round pearls, a single oval pearl, 3 round pearls, a single bicone Austrian crystal.  The groom’s pillow has a lace overlay and an evergreen trim that matches the groomsmen’s vests.  The “I’m The Bride!” Honeymoon corsage I made in the ice white, whisper pink and evergreen to match the wedding colors.

What you have never heard of an “I’m The Bride!” corsage before??  That is because I made it up especially for this bride.  Mrs. C.

Why?

This woman waited for 35 years to get married.  In all the 6 years I knew her, not once did I ever hear even the slightest hint of discontent, not any bitterness.  She showed complete trust in her father’s decisions and stand that he would rather his daughter’s remain unmarried than to be married unsuitably.  What a wonderful testimony to her parent’s and her Lord she showed.

Have you wondered where in the world will you ever find a potential spouse for your child who is ready for marriage but without any suitable courting prospects?  Her husband “came out of nowhere”.  Her family did not know him or his family.  But his pastor knew her family and when he expressed the desire to marry, but someone his own age… he was directed to her family.  In fact there were four different families who directed him tho her family for a potential wife.  God is ABLE.

Are you interested in a set for an upcoming wedding?  Contact me through the comment section of this post with the date of your wedding and what you are looking for.  Pricing depends upon the amount of detail work you are asking for.  A minimum of 8 weeks are required to order.

You too can have a single or pair of custom ring bearer pillows to match the wedding dress of your dreams!

Weight Loss Update – Week 7 & Soap Sale

Here are the previous posts on my very slow girth reduction progress: week 1, week 2, & week 5 but don’t go looking for weeks 3, 4 or 6.

I have still been far too sporadic with my T-Tapping.  But I have Tapped.  Since I started my sporadic Tapping I have lost more inches than pounds.  I had to purchased another tape measure, and I finally measured myself today.  Since July 26th I have reduced a total of 7 inches!   🙂  A little boost to help me with my consistency!

I knew I had reduced in ‘some’ areas.  One bit of proof… we went walking the other day at the park and I wore my new split skirt (purchased in late June).  It has an elastic waist… and kept slipping d-o-w-n…  Oops!  I had to tuck it into my bra in order to walk without indecent exposure.

My Labor Day Sale on Mae’s Handcrafted Natural Soap!  This link will take you to the page will all the details.  Don’t delay, the sale ends tonight!

Weight Loss Update – Week 5 & Soap Sale

Did you think I had forgotten you??  Were you waiting on the edge of your computer chairs… waiting with bated breath for my next ‘weight loss progress’ post??  Well it is finally HERE!  Oh… and there is a week 1 and a week 2, but don’t go looking for weeks 3 & 4.  Those posts just never got written.  Sorry…

Not that I have much to say today.  I have been sporadic with my T-Tapping.  And those days that I have T-Tapped I forgot to mark it down on the calendar.  So now to go back and report accurately… well that just isn’t possible! And I had a wonderful bible verse I wanted to share… but now can’t find the piece of paper I wrote the reference on… sigh.

I did weigh myself and have taken off 2 more pounds.  Not a stellar reduction, but I am not discouraged!  I will continue to persevere.  I know I need to be more consistent with the T-Tapping and I could probably stand to do some more tweaking on my eating plan.

I think the one thing that would help me the most is to actually get a weekly menu made up.  Standing at the refrigerator at 6 PM wondering what to fix for dinner is not a good thing.  I had made a menu preciously and loved it!  It was so freeing.  If I wanted to deviate I could do so easily, but I knew what I was going to fix and made sure I had all the ingredients on hand to do so.  I also found that I had more variety in my meals with a schedule.  Without one I tend to fix the same thing over and over because a) it is easy, b) the how to’s are in my head and c) I have the ingredients on hand.

I have followed my eating plan pretty well up to date.  Even with the Patriarch’s birthday celebration!  I made him a Willimasburg Orange Cake.  Well of course if was gluten and dairy free!!  Did you really need to ask??!!!  🙂  What you don’t see in my photos is that I made a single layer, cut it in half.  That made for a half of a two layer cake.  Much better size for our small family.  And baking by ratio means it is a simple thing to double or triple or more the recipe to suit your individual needs.

Then on the 13 of August we met Flopsy and her husband, the Geek, at the Patriarch’s favorite restaurant.  Staying away from gluten is SO much easier than that dastardly hidden dairy!  Ugh.  I did manage to find something that I thought might be ‘safe’ for me to eat and then asked all the standard questions about sauces and butter, etc.  Our waitress was wonderful.  I had ordered a salad and when it came it had croutons on it.  She asked me if she needed to have them remake it for me!  It was a lovely evening.  I literally could NOT eat all my dinner!  I took a few extra bites and then stopped.  I had to give myself permission to NOT eat all that expensive food and I didn’t take it home either.  I was SO full from my dinner that dessert was easily skipped by me!  Yeah!!

And I have some exciting news!  No, I am not pregnant, I wish!!  I know how you think!  I have “officially” launched my soap business as of the 20th of August!!  I have been busily making plenty of soap and started off with a Labor Day Sale!  This link will take you to the page will all the details.

That is all the news that is fit to print.  I will try to post more often… if WordPress would cooperate.  Or is it my computer?  Every time I try to do some action (save, upload a photo, publish, etc) the operation takes f.o.r.e.v.e.r and e.v.e.r and e..v…e….r……..  Hope I find the glitch soon!

UPDATE!  I did find and fix my own computer problem.  I am amazed… I did it all by myself!  My problem was… cookies.  I needed to delete them.  Appropriate for a weight loss post.  🙂

Blessings, ~Mrs. R
